Funding received for Oral History Project

The Commonwealth Government has allocated $4,000 to upgrade computer equipment held by the Walgett District Historical Society. Vice President Margaret Weber stated “ The Society is absolutely delighted to receive this support as it will allow us to launch our oral history project in the second half of 2010. We are planning to video up to ten senior citizens and place high lights on the website. It is very important to capture the remarkable memories many of these individuals have.”

The Society will use the Oral History Association guidelines in undertaking this project which provides a unique opportunity to harness the energy of all the members.

Walgett Museum receives major stimulus grant

Walgett District Historical Society was successful in attracting over $80,000 in grant funding under the Commonwealth Government stimulus package. Five projects are currently underway, repainting the interior and exterior of the museum building, upgrading the object store, replacing the guttering, installing ten new interpretative panels and upgrading the floor treatments. A further $2000 has been allocated by the Walgett Shire Council to assist with u8pgrading the lighting system.

Richard Wesley of Museum Planning Services Australia who is helping coordinate the project stated “the aim of the project is to generate local employment opportunities while improving the look and feel of this magnificent building.”

The project is due for completion by June and the oppening will provide a unique opportunity to promote the work of the Society and acknowledge the skills of local tradespeople who were involved with the refurbishment.
