Vaughnan’s Store and Emporium

Vaughan’s Store and Shopping Complex

Charles Nean Vaughan was born in Kent England.  He opened his General, Wholesale and Retail Wine and Spirit businesses in Walgett in 1875.

His two storey business was constructed from locally made clay bricks.  The building was described in the early days as “standing in splendour”. The site of Vaughan’s cellar was evident by an indentation in the ground for many years following demolition of the building.

This building stood approximately on the site of the present Medical Centre, opposite the Court House and Police Station and alongside the Court House Hotel built in later years.

The top parapets of the original shops adjacent to the building are still visible in the streetscape, although the shops below have been altered to suit proprietors’ uses.

There was also an arcade associated with Vaughan’s store.
