Walgett Police Station
(Observations of D M Jones on his visit to Walgett in 1886 on his return after an absence of five years).
The Police Station was completed in 1881, a brick building that stood beside the Court House. The Court House, Police Station and the Police Barracks were described as “substantial brick buildings of handsome design and remarkably well built and liberally furnished.”
Walgett Police Barracks were built at a cost of One Thousand, Eight Hundred pounds (₤1,800) and were situated in Wee Waa Street and the Sub-Inspector’s residence was built on the corner of Fox and Euroka Streets at a further sum of ₤1,900. This may have been known as the Gaoler’s residence. The gaol was built behind this house, on the area known as Gray’s Park. This was a substantial and commodious building erected on the corner of Pitt and Euroka Streets. Mr W Lee Jnr, an officer from the Colonial Architects Department was in charge of the structure.
The Old Gaol was built from convict bricks and was an impressive structure.
